About California
California is one of the westernmost states that make up the contiguous 48 states. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east, and Mexico to the south. California has over 39.5 million residents, making it the most populous state in the U.S. It also has the largest sub-national economy in the world. Historically, California contained the highest Native American population density north of what is now Mexico and was one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in North America. Spanish explorers first landed on the coast in 1542, claiming it for the Spanish Empire. In 1821 The Mexican War of Independence successfully granted Mexico, which included present-day California, independence from Spain. America acquired the land during the Mexican-American War in 1847 and it officially became the nation’s 31st state in 1850. California is known for its car culture and its transportation relies primarily on its vast highway system comprised of many freeways, limited-access roads, and state highways.

From the welcome center, a gently sloping ramp leads up to the bridge’s pedestrian walkway. The walkway is wide enough to accommodate both pedestrians and bikers and has a safety barrier to separate the walkway from traffic. The surface of the walkway is smooth concrete. In addition to the pedestrian walkway, some trails lead underneath the bridge and connect to nearby parks. The surfaces vary between paved and packed dirt. The packed dirt segments may be difficult for some wheelchair users to navigate.
